Incumbent Senator Tammy Duckworth (D) won the Democratic primaries with no contest. On November 8 she will run against Kathy Salvi (R) and Bill Redpath (L).

Some of the top issues on each candidate’s campaign site include abortion, student loan forgiveness and police reform. Regarding abortion rights, Duckworth and Redpath agree that the individual should have access to abortion procedures. Although Redpath states that he supported the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Salvi, however, has explained in debates that she is firmly pro-life.

President Biden’s plan for student loan forgiveness was also a topic in debates between Duckworth and Salvi. Duckworth supports the president’s proposal and other government funding programs while Salvi takes issue with the source of student loan forgiveness backing. Redpath condemns student loan forgiveness as “regressive” while citing The Brookings Institution.

Another key concern for candidates is police reform. In the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement and increased discussion of police brutality, politicians are pushed to make legislative changes. Salvi directly addresses this on her campaign site and expresses support for the police while denouncing the Defund the Police movement.
