At the end of the 2021–22 NHL season, unexpected changes were made to the Chicago Blackhawks roster in order to begin a rebuild of the team. This stirred rumors that Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews were next to be traded.

Both athletes have been with the Chicago team for 15 years, since 2007. The game data collected shows an interesting history for each player. Patrick Kane plays the right wing position while Jonathan Toews is team captain and plays the center position.

The graph below depicts the ups and downs of both players’ careers.

As shown in the graph, Kane’s highest scoring season was 2018–19 with a total of 110 points scored. The 2012–13 season, however, was his lowest scoring year at 55 points. Overall, his average is 78.6 points.

Kane recently became the second highest all-time point scorer in the history of the Blackhawks franchise.

Toews scored the most in the 2008–09 season with a total of 69 points. His lowest scoring season was this past year, 2021–22, at 37 points. This does not include the 2020–21 season in which he did not play. His career average is 60.8 points.

Compared to each other, Kane’s career scoring has remained largely consistent whereas Toews’ level of play has more variation and has dropped significantly from Kane’s averages.

This difference could be due to Toews’ health. Throughout his Blackhawks career, Toews has missed several games due to injury. During the 2020–21 season, he was out for the entire year “due to an undisclosed medical issue.” Although not specific to this instance, Toews and many NHL athletes have a history with concussions and other traumatic brain injuries.

At 34 years old, both Kane and Toews are expected to lead the Blackhawks into the next seasons and through the team’s rebuild.
